Seed Pixel Matrix
Circuit boards that turn strings of seed pixels into an evenly spaced matrix. Seed pixels are small and light, and the boards keep the spacing nice and even. We built it for a garage door that still has to open.

What it is
- Board size 25 x 300 mm (0.98 x 11.81 in)
- Two versions: 5 cm and 2.5 cm pixel spacing
- Each board holds 3 loops of seed pixels; a loop of 64 runs 32 pixels down and 32 back up
- Join boards together with the in and out pads on the sides
- Cut lines to make a board shorter, with pads so the off-cuts can be used too
- Zip-tie holes for strain relief and several mounting holes
On our garage door
We built it so the garage door still works and the car still goes in and out. The matrix is 32 x 84 seed pixels (2,688 in all) on 14 boards across a 16 ft door: 42 loops of 64 pixels, two boards joined per output, on 7 ports of the controller (384 pixels per port).
Hanging and spacing
- Each board has mounting holes; on a wooden door, screw it straight on. For metal, or if you'd rather not drill, try 3M Command strips or magnets glued to the back.
- For straight, evenly spaced strings, print the spacer from the STL file in the project: two per board, joined with a 5/16-18 bolt, which also adds weight to pull the strings straight.
- The gerber files for the board and the STL for the spacer are on GitHub.
